GOP Gets a Key ‘Yes’ Vote for Its Tax Bill

WASHINGTON—Republican leaders planning to put their tax package to a vote in coming days got a boost late Monday when Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, who had yet to commit to backing the proposal, said she would be a ”yes.”

House Republicans will vote on Tuesday on the sweeping rewrite of the U.S. tax code, which cuts taxes by $1.5 trillion over 10 years, with the Senate expected to follow later Tuesday or Wednesday. The House is expected to pass the tax overhaul by a comfortable margin, but the vote will be tighter in the Senate, where Republicans control 52 seats, compared with 48 for Democrats, and need a majority in order to pass the tax legislation.
