At the Trump-Xi Summit, China Will have the Upper Hand

Ahead of President Trump’s visit to China, Heidi Crebo-Rediker discusses potential outcomes of his meeting with President Xi Jinping in a new piece for the Council on Foreign Relations. She highlights China’s dominance in critical minerals, which gives it a certain degree of confidence as the summit approaches. She emphasizes that Beijing’s goal will not be confrontation, but rather control. In her view, the best possible outcome of this summit would be “a tacit extension of the current truce, accompanied by some concrete progress in the areas of agriculture, aerospace, and investment.”
