Global Conversations on Central Banking: From Hong Kong to Basel

This week, the Bretton Woods Committee engaged our global membership in Hong Kong and Switzerland to delve into the evolving role of central banks across financial stability, digital finance, and the international monetary system.

At a Leadership Dinner in Hong Kong, Laura Cha hosted a conversation between William C. Dudley and Joseph Yam on the outlooks of the US Dollar and the Renminbi as international currencies. You can watch William C. Dudley discuss many of these same themes on a new episode of our Macro Matters podcast. You can also read a new BWC Backgrounder by William C. Dudley on Central Bank Independence, where he clearly defines what it is and, crucially, what it is not.

In Basel at the BIS’s Innovation Summit, we co-hosted a panel on cross-border coordination and payments reform. As panelists, BWC Members Stefan Ingves and Timothy D. Adams discussed the coordination that is required to take advantage of the speed, efficiency, and resilience of cross-border innovation. Read BWC’s recommendations for how to implement two paths to a global instant payments regime here.

We concluded the week with a Leadership Reception in Zurich with members from around the world. Advisory Council Member Veronica Scotti hosted a dialogue between Executive Director Emily Slater and Walter B. Kielholz on our role in helping the global financial landscape adapt to geopolitical turbulence and rapid technological change. Slater and Kielholz emphasized BWC’s role in fostering multilateral cooperation, helping leaders navigate risks and seize opportunities in this evolving landscape.

Next week on 18 September, William C. Dudley will join OMFIF’s Mark Sobel for a discussion on the outcomes of the highly anticipated September FOMC. They’ll be discussing the impacts of any potential rate changes, as well as the Fed’s assessment on inflation and employment in the U.S. Register now.
