BWC Member Alexandra de Hoop Scheffer joins Piotr Smolar in a new article published by Le Monde to discuss how the Iran war has prompted US allies to fundamentally rethink their relationships with Washington. As Scheffer explains, the U.S.’s increased outsourcing of crisis management to regional actors has pushed allies in Europe, the Gulf, and the Indo-Pacific toward greater autonomy, no longer able to rely on American leadership as they once did. She argues this will drive allies to continue engaging with the U.S. where interests align, while acting more independently when common ground cannot be reached, and to accelerate the diversification of partnerships built outside of US influence.
