Today’s global imbalances aren’t what they used to be

In a new article for OMFIF, BWC Member Mark Sobel outlines how global imbalances have changed in the past two decades. After Secretary Bessent and other G7 finance ministers called on the IMF to “bear down on the ‘global imbalances,'” it’s an apt time to look at how the U.S.’s contribution to GI’s has morphed. Sobel writes, “US fiscal deficits are a bigger factor in contributing to GIs than in the past. While the G7’s renewed attention on GIs has legitimately focused on Chinese policies, the US role merits commensurate scrutiny.”
