I thought I understood AI Companies. I couldn’t have been more wrong. 

In a recent New York Times article, BWC Member Jason Furman argues that contrary to monopoly fears, AI companies have become fiercely competitive, with systems like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google Gemini driving rapid innovation and steep cost declines. Easy switching, open models, and intense rivalry are expanding consumer choice, even as profits remain uncertain, and regulation may still be needed to manage risks.
