In a recent article posted by Nikkei Asia, BWC Member Jason Hsu joins economist Patrick Wilson to discuss the degree of influence and recognition Taiwan has in the U.S. Taiwan has become America’s fourth-largest trading partner and successfully cultivated diplomatic relationships with the most economically influential countries across the West. However, President Trump claims Taiwan stole the American semiconductor chips. Hsu and Wilson claim this is due to Taiwan’s lack of a powerful business voice in the U.S. They explain, “Taiwan is a trusted ally and an indispensable partner to the U.S. But there remains a significant gap between its economic weight and its political voice.” Ultimately, the authors believe it is time for Taiwan to close the gap between its economic influence and political presence in the U.S.
